I once worked for and in Chehalis Washington, which has some unusual traffic flow patterns in the downtown area. I learned that some of the more creative traffic flow was designed from overhead photos that were taken after a snowfall. The street layout was patterned after the natural flow of the traffic that found the least path of resistance through the snow in the streets. I have always considered that very creative street engineering.

@ anon:

Some places lay out sidewalks by the same method.
